Hot Roommate Blues, by Parker Avrile was a pleasant surprise. Given the ultimatum of going to Chestnut Dale University or being cut off, he accepts the proposition, but concocts every scheme imaginable to float through the experience, including intimidation and harassment while hiding behind his family name. Kingsley Blake, aka Kyle Pressley, picks Chestnut Dale University as the place to hide out and create a new life for himself, using a scholarship his skills put in place.
Without the shadow of the Joseph Demayo crime family hanging over him, he portrays himself as the goodie two-shoes valedictorian of his high school and a humanitarian who helps the homeless in his spare time.
Secretly, he is an expert hacker and trained in the art of Muay Thai, who has been taught how to evade the law. As roommates they engage in hot and demanding sexual encounters that, at first, are just that. Yet, a connection is there and as time passes hot roomates reluctant bond forms. Their on again, off again relationship is, at times, painful to witness, but when they connect there is a passion that surpasses everything.
When the FBI comes knocking, Kingsley fears that they have found Kyle Pressley, whereas Stryker dismisses it as senior hazing of the new guys. I found Hot Roommate Blues to be a unique and engaging story.
Hot roommate blues
I did have to overlook some of the slightly implausible scenarios and situations these guys get themselves into. On the flip side, both Kingsley and Stryker pulled off their respective personas quite well, as the intelligent teenager with a hidden past and the privileged brat. Hot Roommate Blues is the first part of a two-part series that concludes when Hot Mafia Blues is released.
As such, there are things left unresolved which I assume will be divulged during our next visit to Last Chances Academy.
Dec 15, John-Torleif Harris rated it it was ok. While I thought that the two characters definitely seemed to have chemistry together, and that they were hot, I'm not sure that I was able to suspend my disbelief about this whole scenario. Kingsley is the protege of a mafia don, who is also on the FBI's most wanted list, and yet, the FBI doesn't seem to actually be looking for him in connection to the mafia case.
He's changed identities several times, to muddy the waters, and has finally settled into being Kingsley Blake - an orphaned teenager f While I thought that the two characters definitely seemed to have chemistry together, and that they were hot, I'm not sure that I was able to suspend my disbelief about this whole scenario. He's changed identities several times, to muddy the waters, and has finally settled into being Kingsley Blake - an orphaned teenager from Chicago who was valedictorian, an amazing humanitarian, and recipient of a new scholarship that allows him to pick the most backwards university in all of the US.
Hot roomates did he make up a story that is so easy to disprove?

Wouldn't it have been better to have been better than average, but not quite so outstanding? Then there was Stryker. He is the son of the local billionaire and everything in the area is named after his family. Because of his father's money, he thinks that he's untouchable until his father gives him an ultimatum to go to the college named after them, or be cut off. While at school, Stryker bullies everyone because he "owns" the school, town, and county. He is incapable of even realizing that he is basically breaking the law with every other action he commits, and when confronted with the fact, he spouts some very Medici logic about how his county belongs to his family, not DC, and that they are hot roomates helping out the folks who help them.
When the FBI show up, Kingsley is immediately sure that they're after him, and Stryker is just as sure that it's all a senior prank. And here's another thing that was hard to suspend my disbelief about. Sure, I went to a decent university, but even the most lazy university seniors I can think of, were too involved in their own stuff to bother with something as lame as some sort of organized secret hazing of freshmen. Stryker's ego, and unfounded self confidence are never challenged, and the end of this book has him setting himself up for failure all while he's congratulating himself on how clever hot roomates is.
Overall, I am only barely ok with this book. Neither character was particularly believable, and neither character experienced any ificant growth.
We just have one overly capable teenager meeting another overly privileged one, they are attracted to each other, but nothing really happens. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. Jan 14, Stephanie W rated it really liked it.
